WHISKERS OF THE WEEK

Week of October 29, 2023 - Dancer

Dancer is our Whiskers of the Week!

Dancer is a lovely calico, around 3 years old. She was picked up as a stray on July 19. She is microchipped, but unfortunately the data has not been kept up to date with the chip company. Dancer is an affectionate girl who will adore snuggling with you on the couch. Dancer is unfortunately FIV+. SCAC was recently granted approval by the county to make FIV+ cats available for adoption. You can read more about FIV below, but the short version is that it is a virus unique to cats and not as easily transmitted to other cats as once believed. While there is currently no vaccination or cure, cats with FIV commonly live average life spans. So, while Dancer is positive for FIV, this will not stop her from living her best life in her forever home! Come in soon to meet this very special girl. Dancer is negative for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). She is waiting for you at Sangamon County Animal Control in Springfield, IL.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). In infected cats, FIV attacks the immune system, leaving the cat vulnerable to many other infections. Though there is no cure for FIV, recent studies suggest that cats with FIV commonly live average life spans, as long as they are not also infected with feline leukemia virus. FIV is a highly species-specific virus that infects only felines. There is currently no evidence that FIV can infect or cause disease in humans. The primary mode of transmission for FIV is through bite wounds from an infected cat. Casual, non-aggressive contact, such as sharing water bowls or mutual grooming, does not appear to be an efficient route of spreading the virus. As a result, CATS IN HOUSEHOLDS WITH STABLE SOCIAL STRUCTURES WHERE HOUSEMATES DO NOT FIGHT ARE AT LITTLE RISK OF ACQUIRING FIV INFECTIONS.
